Is design remix real?
July 16th, 2008 @ 3:10 pm

I miss the days when the HGTV show Design Remix was on everyday.  I can still find reruns & new episodes on early in the morning or on Saturdays. The premise is that the design show comes in & just reuses everything hiding in closets or the garage to redo a room.  They have a $50 budget & some paint.  The results are fantastic.

There has been some controversy on whether this show “stocks” the garages beforehand.  People always seem to have gorgeous bolts of silk fabric even though they don’t sew.  However, I was just watching an episode where Karen couldn’t find a lot of materials so she had to go over budget.  I guess that means that Design Remix is real.

Sleep On It
June 5th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

Sleep on it is an HGTV show that lets house hunters spend the night in a home they are considering buying. In the morning they have to make a decision. Will they buy it or pass it by?

I think it’s a great idea because they get to take the house for a test drive. Buyers get to see things like can they sleep through the noise of a nearby street? (They never can) I think it’s a novel idea. I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to try it. It would just feel weird to be living in someone else’s house with all of their things. Plus, I’d be mildly afraid that the place was haunted. Would you try it?

Why I Hate The Antiques Roadshow
May 13th, 2008 @ 12:47 am

antiquenotroadshow.jpgAt first glance, Antiques Roadshow seems like a really great idea. They travel all across the country & regular people wait in a very long line to have random stuff from their house appraised. It’s extremely informative. I remember an episode of Will & Grace where Grace & Jack took in a random piece of junk. They wanted to be able to say that they thought it was worth a lot of money then make a sad face on TV when they found out it was worth nothing.

Lately, I find Antiques Roadshow to be depressing. It seems to go like this:

Auctioneer: Tell us about this piece.

Person: Well, it was passed down from my great grandmother to my grandma to my mom then to my. I just want to learn more about it.

Auctioneer: Do you have any idea what it is worth?

Person: I really have no clue, it has tons of sentimental value. I want to give it to my daughter someday.

Auctioneer: Well, it’s worth $183

Person: I had no idea. Where can I sell it?

It just makes me sad to see so many people willing to sell their heirlooms so they can buy an ipod or something. If it was $118,000, yes I’d probably sell it, but other than that Antiques Roadshow just makes me sad.

I’m so handy
April 15th, 2008 @ 6:30 pm

HPIM0844.JPGI’m a little bit like Rory from Gilmore Girls. I have books under the bed, in extra drawers, & even on my bookshelf. So I saw this cute shelf at family dollar for $15. I was worried that it would say assembly required. I’m not so good at assembly.

Instead the box said “flip shelves.” These are now the most beautiful words in the English language. The shelves literally just flipped down. It will be so easy to take with me when I move. I said “Ohh I thought there was a third shelf”, then I just flipped the last shelf down. Now I just need to accessorize. I built a bookshelf I’m so handy.
